Steam is the go-to destination for PC gamers, whether you’re looking to play the latest titles or an old classic that’s still kicking around. Even if you can’t or don’t want to spend a cent, there are plenty of free Steam games well worth your time.

Free-to-play games are a massive part of the video game market. While F2P was once relegated primarily to mobile games–and let’s be honest, often looked down upon–the model has become a mainstay and now represents some of the biggest and most popular games in their respective genres, across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. That includes blockbuster hero shooters like Fortnite and Marvel Rivals, RPGs like Dauntless and Zenless Zone Zero, and card games like Hearthstone and Marvel Snap, among many others.

Over the past several years, the gaming industry has adapted to meet more of the community’s needs–something that’s evidenced when looking at how many great cross-platform games now exist. While some industry trends have been met with negativity, others have become staples that gamers everywhere have come to enjoy. Cross-play or cross-platform support, allowing players to connect with their friends and other players on different systems from their own, has been a very welcome development. 10 years ago, this feature wasn’t present in most titles–now, there are hundreds of games that let you play alongside or against other players regardless of their platform of choice.

Survival games aren’t all created equal, and determining the best ones is no easy feat, as community consensus can vary wildly. But there’s no denying that the genre has become one of the most popular in the gaming industry, with several high-profile releases every year garnering millions of players.
When it comes to classifying a game as a “survival” experience, you’re primarily looking for it to have elements that make gameplay out of the idea of keeping yourself alive, such as a health, hunger, or thirst meter you need to keep replenishing, and requirements of clothing yourself and building a shelter so you don’t succumb to the elements. There are usually objectives you’ll pursue, but there isn’t always a dedicated story or plot. Some of the best survival games just have a set of goals to get you started, with the rest of the experience being an open sandbox.

While exploring a spooky house or escaping a killer can be fun on your own, there’s nothing quite like playing the best multiplayer horror games and facing off against demons with a few friends by your side. Sometimes screams will be replaced with laughter as you bond over a friend’s death or near-death experience. Oftentimes, the fear comes rushing back as soon as you’re the last one standing and everyone’s survival rests on your shoulders.

Survival horror is one of gaming’s most nebulous genres. Traditionally defined by limited resources, oppressive tension, and a fight for survival against terrifying odds, the genre has evolved far beyond its roots. Modern survival horror often bleeds into psychological thrillers, sci-fi adventures, and even open-world exploration. What ties it all together is a constant sense of dread and vulnerability, where victory feels hard-earned and fleeting. From cinematic blockbusters to minimalist indies, survival horror has proven to be one of the most fascinating corners of gaming.
