This list is in no particular order and focuses on free games where you can access a majority of the game’s content without spending money. Counter-Strike 2

Release Date: September 27, 2023
4295962 cs2
  • Developer: Valve
  • Release Date: September 27, 2023
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter

It doesn’t feel right to have any other title kick off the list after Counter-Strike 2 reinvented the famous franchise with its late 2023 release. Valve corrected course with Counter-Strike 2, making it a free-to-play title right off the bat instead of charging users to play as it initially did with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. While CS2 keeps most of the aspects and features from CS:GO in place, it also improves upon them in numerous ways. From new mechanics and graphics to a more fluid user experience overall, CS2 is still the classic FPS that PC gamers grew up loving. And now, in 2026, the franchise is more widely available than ever thanks to the free price of admission.

Marvel Rivals

Release Date: December 5, 2024
4455371 mrv
  • Developer: NetEase Games
  • Release Date: December 5, 2024
  • Genre: Hero Shooter

After storming onto the gaming scene in December 2024, Marvel Rivals has established itself as one of the premier shooters on the market. Marvel Rivals follows in the footsteps of Overwatch in terms of core gameplay but adds so much nuance with its lineup of Marvel heroes.
While developer NetEase Games is adding new heroes all the time, the game currently features over 45 of Marvel’s most famous superheroes, all of which are available to players for free. Every hero is classified as a specific role, and in order for your team to win a match, all roles need to be represented and players need to do their jobs correctly. Matches in Marvel Rivals consist of six players per team, each using one distinct hero, and can be played across a variety of maps and modes. While your team can only have six different heroes, some of those heroes offer special team-up abilities that can completely change how a match is played.
The game offers both casual and ranked playlists, plenty of challenges to complete, and frequent events to earn additional rewards. Marvel Rivals does feature a hefty amount of cosmetic microtransactions, but you can also save up in-game currency if you want to purchase a skin for your favorite hero.

Lost Ark

Release Date: November 7, 2018
4296015 la
  • Developer: Smilegate
  • Release Date: November 7, 2018
  • Genre: MMORPG

Lost Ark became an instant sensation when it was released on Steam in early 2022. Of course, if you’d been following the game before that, you know it was also a massive hit in the Eastern part of the world, where it had been popular for several years. The Western release of the game allowed it to come to Steam and gain an entirely new following. Lost Ark is an MMORPG that features some of the most in-depth systems you’ll find in an RPG. From the way the classes work to understanding what every single item in the game does, you can lose yourself for hundreds of hours in Lost Ark’s gigantic world.

Dota 2

Release Date: July 9, 2013
Dota 2
  • Developer: Valve
  • Release Date: July 9, 2013
  • Genre: MOBA

Yet another free-to-play title from Valve, Dota 2 has remained one of the most popular MOBAs on the market, and one of the most played games on Steam for years. While League of Legends might be the more famous MOBA, there’s no denying the impact Dota 2 has had on the gaming industry. It was released in 2013 and was free right from the start, an uncommon business model back in the early 2010s. While similar to League of Legends in various ways, Dota 2 has remained popular thanks to challenging gameplay that keeps even long-term players on their toes. If you can get past the game’s steep learning curve, you’ll be hard-pressed to put the game down again.

Apex Legends

Release Date: February 4, 2019
Apex Legends
  • Developer: Respawn
  • Release Date: February 4, 2019
  • Genre: Battle Royale/First-Person Shooter

Apex Legends is a standout in the crowded online FPS market, and one of best multiplayer games available for free on Steam. The battle royale/arena FPS has consistently been a top choice for multiplayer gamers every year since its release in 2019.
While a bulk of the game’s legends (heroes) are locked to begin with, it is possible to unlock them through gameplay instead of microtransactions. It might take a while, but with enough hours you’ll eventually be able to unlock all of the legends that have arrived in the years since Apex’s initial launch.
The game itself is a fast-paced battle royale shooter with witty characters, deep customization, incredibly fast and fluid gameplay, featuring several game modes to pick from. Further improving the experience, Apex offers cross-play and cross-progression, allowing you to play with those on other platforms or take your unlocks between systems.

Team Fortress 2

Release Date: October 10, 2007
Team Fortress 2
  • Developer: Valve
  • Release Date: October 10, 2007
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter

Another entry from Valve, Team Fortress 2 was released way back in 2007 as part of The Orange Box before transforming into a free-to-play title in 2011. The game’s business model influenced the live service game model as we know it today, as Valve was a pioneer of raising revenue via microtransactions in lieu of an entry price after TF2 went free-to-play.
The gameplay in Team Fortress 2 hasn’t changed much over the years, focusing on FPS action with a distinct set of nine classes. If you haven’t played the game since the early days, or only ever on console, it’s seen some great quality of life updates with a loadout system that grants more flexibility to each class without betraying their archetypes (plus, you can equip some sweet hats). TF2 still gets occasional content updates, and boasts a relatively small but dedicated playerbase, so there’s no reason not to try out one of the most iconic FPS games of all time.

Warframe

Release Date: March 25, 2013
4296024 warframe1
  • Developer: Digital Extremes
  • Release Date: March 25, 2013
  • Genre: MMORPG

A Steam darling for years, Warframe is one of go-to recommendations when it comes to free-to-play games. Warframe has grown much larger since its initial release, starting as a story-driven third-person shooter with multiplayer features but growing into a content-filled masterpiece that’s still receiving updates in 2026.
It can be defined as a grindy looter shooter with plenty of microtransactions, but as long as you put in the time, you can acquire just about anything you set your sights on in Warframe. This is especially good considering how addictive the gameplay is, featuring fast-paced movement, fantastic gunplay, and a wide variety of locations and enemies.

Path of Exile

Release Date: October 23, 2013
4296026 poe
  • Developer: Grinding Gear Games
  • Release Date: October 23, 2013
  • Genre: ARPG

While Path of Exile 2 might eventually surpass its predecessor, the original Path of Exile is still one of the best games on Steam, period. The ARPG revolutionized a genre that was mainly dominated by the Diablo franchise, implementing in-depth classes and systems. You can build a character any way you want, and it takes hours to fully understand all of the skills and mechanics of each class. The story and world should also not be underestimated in Path of Exile–you’re thrust into a fantasy world where the ruling government has exiled your kind to an outside continent, forced to fight your way back to seek your revenge.

Final Fantasy XIV Online (Trial Version)

Release Date: September 30, 2010
4296028 ff
  • Developer: Square Enix
  • Release Date: September 30, 2010
  • Genre: MMORPG

Final Fantasy XIV is arguably one of, if not the best MMORPGs that you can play in 2026. It features hundreds of hours of gameplay, several expansions, and has a large and (mostly) welcoming community of dedicated players. The game technically requires a subscription to play, which would make it ineligible for this list, but we’re getting around that by including the Trial Version of FFXIV on the list instead.
The trial version is surprisingly generous, including the entirety of the base story, A Realm Reborn, and its two expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood. You can get your character to level 70 in the trial and experience a large chunk of the game without ever forking over a dime. FFXIV offers arguably the best bang for your time value on this entire list.

Destiny 2

Release Date: August 28, 2017
4296041 d2
  • Developer: Bungie
  • Release Date: August 28, 2017
  • Genre: MMO

Destiny 2 didn’t get off to the best start when it released in 2017, but after years of work and updates, the developers at Bungie have delivered a great MMO shooter. One of the best components of Destiny 2 is the ability to play with your friends regardless of what system they’re on, which makes raids and other events much more enjoyable. Of course, you’re still free to play Destiny 2 entirely solo and as a PvP or PvE shooter, which makes it a title you can always come back to year in and year out. While you’ll eventually want to spend money on the DLC if you decide to get heavily invested in the game, there is a substantial portion of the overall experience that you can enjoy without doing so.

RuneScape/OSRS

Release Date: January 4, 2001
4296084 osrs
  • Developer: Jagex
  • Release Date: January 4, 2001
  • Genre: MMORPG

Few games can bring back as much nostalgia for gamers in 2024 as Old School Runescape. The classic MMORPG, released in the early 2000s, has become a mainstay in the genre, maintaining a player base of millions year after year. For a while, OSRS and the newer version, simply dubbed Runescape, were only available to play via Jagex’s launcher. However, the developers eventually brought both games to Steam, introducing an entirely new community to the world of Runescape.
While both games require a member’s subscription to fully experience everything they have to offer, you can play and access hours of content for free. Both games are fantastic MMORPGs, offering 50+ unique and in-depth quests, two dozen individual classes to level up, and thousands of items to loot, among several other systems and features.

The Sims 4

Release Date: September 2, 2014
The Sims 4
  • Developer: EA
  • Release Date: September 2, 2014
  • Genre: Simulation

The Sims is one of the most recognizable gaming franchises in the industry, and you can play the fourth installment completely free on Steam. The Sims 4 is the life simulator that everyone knows and loves, complete with full customization of your Sims, their homes, and the cities they live in. You can travel to different cities to learn about new Sims and their lives and you have full control over your personal Sims’ lives and how they live them. You’re essentially playing God, and it’s up to you how you wield that power.
The Sims 4 continues to receive regular content updates, and though most expansions require an extra purchase, they almost always come with a free update that adds new content to the base game. While EA is still working on the multiplayer-focused Project Rene, it looks like the Sims 4 is here to stay as the main title in the series, which will continue to be expanded via paid packs.

Fallout Shelter

Release Date: June 14, 2015
Fallout Shelter
  • Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
  • Release Date: June 14, 2015
  • Genre: Strategy Game

With the recent success around the Fallout TV show and players flocking back to the Fallout games, why not try one of the more underrated titles in the franchise? While Fallout Shelter isn’t a deep RPG with tons of lore, it is an enjoyable settlement simulator that tasks you with maintaining a vault as an Overseer. Build new areas within the vault, use tools and junk items to upgrade areas for your citizens, and overcome any problems that arise.
In Fallout Shelter you can connect deeply with the Vault Dwellers that call your vault their home, speaking with them and listening to any issues they have. While most gameplay is centered around the shelter, you’re also able to explore the surface and engage in combat to keep your vault safe, calling back to the mainline Fallout titles.

The Finals

Release Date: December 7, 2023
The Finals
  • Developer: Embark Studios
  • Release Date: December 7, 2023
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter

The Finals is a free-to-play action FPS that takes destructible environments to a whole new level. It follows the arena shooter style of gameplay, with a majority of the modes matching up teams who are given the sole goal of eliminating enemy teams. With fully destructible environments present on all of the game’s maps, matches can get extremely chaotic. This aspect specifically gives The Finals a highly replayable experience, as no two matches will ever play out the same way.

War Thunder

Release Date: November 1, 2012
4296136 wt1
  • Developer: Gaijin Entertainment
  • Release Date: November 1, 2012
  • Genre: MMO

War Thunder is not your run-of-the-mill MMORPG. You don’t design a character and step out into a fantastic world with adventure waiting around every corner. Instead, you’re placed at the center of military conflicts and must use land, sea, or ground vehicles to dispatch enemies in all sorts of unique crafts. These vehicles range from older, 20th-century crafts to the most modern ones that are available. The diversity of combat really shines in War Thunder, as you can battle enemies in new locations whether you’re on the ground in a tank, on the sea in a naval ship, or in the air with a fighter jet.

Call of Duty: Warzone

Release Date: March 10, 2020
Call of Duty: Warzone
  • Developer: Activision
  • Release Date: March 10, 2020
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter

Love it or hate it, Warzone is one of the most popular games on the market today. Though not everyone is a Call of Duty fan, you can’t deny the cultural impact Warzone has made on the industry and the community at large. A free-to-play battle royale title, Warzone features the familiar gameplay loop of dropping onto a large map, fighting for loot, and surviving to be the last person or team standing. Warzone adds its own nuances to this loop, from picking a weapon loadout to completing contracts, and, of course, fighting your way back into the game via the Gulag. Warzone isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so it’s worth at least a match or two if you’re a fan of FPS titles. Warzone receives frequent seasonal updates, as well as more major changes every year when a new mainline CoD title releases.

Brawlhalla

Release Date: April 30, 2014
4296093 bh
  • Developer: Blue Mammoth Games
  • Release Date: April 30, 2014
  • Genre: Fighting Game

While many have tried to imitate the formula pioneered by Super Smash Bros., Brawlhalla does a better job than most–and does it for free. Featuring a wide variety of fighters and maps, Brawlhalla takes the Smash Bros. style of gameplay and puts its own twist on it.
The game features public, private, and ranked matches to compete in, as well as eight-player online and local co-op. You can also experience a huge number of crossovers featuring playable characters from different franchises, from Star Wars to Tomb Raider. Of course, there’s plenty of content in Brawlhalla that’s locked behind a paywall, but that’s the nature of free-to-play titles.

Naraka: Bladepoint

Release Date: August 11, 2021
Naraka: Bladepoint
  • Developer: 24 Entertainment
  • Release Date: August 11, 2021
  • Genre: Battle Royale

Naraka: Bladepoint is an underrated multiplayer shooter with deep combat systems and challenging gameplay. Focusing most heavily on melee combat, Naraka forces you to get up close and personal with your opponents if you want to eliminate them and get one step closer to winning its take on the battle royale. The game features souls-like elements in its combat, challenging players to learn combos, parrying, and dodging. Each match features up to 60 players who are dropped onto a medium-sized map to fight it out using the loot that’s scattered through the game arena. While the core gameplay loop doesn’t deviate much from your average battle royale title, the engaging combat is where Naraka: Bladepoint stands out.

Guild Wars 2

Release Date: August 28, 2012
4296138 gw2
  • Developer: ArenaNet
  • Release Date: August 28, 2012
  • Genre: MMORPG

One of the older games on this list, MMORPG Guild Wars 2 only came to Steam in 2022. It features a large and engaging open world called Tyria, which encourages players to explore. There are dozens and dozens of unique locations to see, where you can take on quests, defeat enemies, or simply take in the sights.
Other players in your world can team up to solve puzzles, complete in-game events, or defeat a massive world boss together. As with any MMORPG, you can choose from a variety of classes, each possessing its own lineup of weapons and gear to wield. The base game of Guild Wars 2 is completely free, but you’ll have to buy extra expansions to experience everything the MMORPG has to offer.

Doki Doki Literature Club

Release Date: September 22, 2017
4296139 dd
  • Developer: Team Salvato
  • Release Date: September 22, 2017
  • Genre: Visual Novel

Doki Doki Literature Club is unlike anything else on this list. While you might be immediately distracted by the vibrant colors and anime designs of the game, those distractions won’t last long, as you’ll soon be shocked by horrific events that happen to the game’s characters. A visual novel game, Doki Doki Literature Club is not for the faint of heart, as you’ll need to be able to endure some truly disturbing sights that include depictions of murder, gore, and more. I’ll save the rest of the game’s details for you to experience on your own, but be warned that Doki Doki is not what it seems at first.

Once Human

Release Date: July 9, 2024
4455372 oh
  • Developer: NetEase Games
  • Release Date: July 9, 2024
  • Genre: Open-World Survival

Once Human is a game that can scratch multiple itches with its unique combination of genres. At its core, Once Human is an open-world survival game that doesn’t make it easy on players trying to survive its massive open world. Outside of challenging environmental factors, you’ll also have to contend with mutated enemies of differing sizes and difficulty, with the possibility that a building-size enemy could be lurking around any corner on the map.
Unlike other survival games, Once Human also includes RPG elements, allowing you to unlock perks as you level up. You’ll also be able to follow story quests that take you to different parts of the map–though be warned, these won’t scale with your current level.
Once Human offers fairly extensive and intuitive base-building, co-op with other players, and a ton of interesting mechanics. You can discover unique abilities that you’ll be able to harness at your base, and you’ll be able to drive numerous vehicles around the map–but only once you unlock the blueprints for them. Suffice it to say, there’s no shortage of things to do in Once Human.

PUBG: Battlegrounds

Release Date: March 23, 2017
4455373 pubg
  • Developer: PUBG Corporation
  • Release Date: March 23, 2017
  • Genre: Battle Royale

While no longer the go-to battle royale game on Steam, PUBG is still notable as the game that helped pave the way for the massive battle royale trend.
PUBG has evolved a lot over the years, since it was first released in early 2017. It began as a tactical battle royale game that featured difficult-to-master gunplay, intense looting, and some wonky vehicle mechanics. While all of those elements are still a part of PUBG today, the developers have added a plethora of content over the years, and upgraded many of its systems as the game’s popularity grew.. There are roughly 10 total maps, dozens of weapons and attachments, and plenty of ways to get killed in this unforgiving battle royale.
While PUBG has evolved, offering much more than it did at launch, it remains a battle royale game at its core. You drop in, find some loot, eliminate players in your way, grab their loot, avoid the gas circle, and try to be the last team standing. PUBG offers casual and ranked modes as well as different POV modes.

Wuthering Waves

Release Date: April 29, 2025
Wuthering Waves
  • Developer: Kuro Games
  • Release Date: April 29, 2025
  • Genre: Action RPG

One of the more popular in the recent wave of Genshin Impact-inspired action RPGs, Wuthering Waves takes the genre into the beautiful post-apocalyptic world of Solaris-3. You play as the Rover, a mysterious amnesiac character who must uncover their own past as part of their journey.
Just like Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves sees you collecting allies–in this game titled Resonators–who can be unlocked as playable characters through the game’s gacha system. High-tier weapons are also locked behind gacha roles.
Where Wuthering Waves sets itself apart is through its flashy and fun combat mechanics, as well as its cinematic cutscenes through its main story quest. The world of Solaris-3 is also uniquely designed and beautifully rendered in game, featuring an interesting mix of high-tech weaponry and fantasy elements.

Endless Sky

Release Date: Oct 30, 2015
Endless Sky
  • Developer: Michael Zahniser
  • Release Date: Oct 30, 2015
  • Genre: Simulation

Another unique title for this list, Endless Sky is a deep-space combat simulator. You start out as a space captain to your name other than your ship. To start earning some money, you can transport passengers, trade resources, and complete other odd jobs throughout the galaxy.
At the forefront of the 2D single-player game is combat and trading. The game’s combat is notoriously difficult to master, requiring you to navigate through an enemy’s defenses while also avoiding their attacks. As for trading, there are several systems in place that allow you to make money, but you can also lose it just as easily. For fans of retro space games or those with a love for space combat in general, Endless Sky is not a game to miss.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby

Release Date: June 25, 2025
Umamusume: Pretty Derby
  • Developer: Cygames, Inc
  • Release Date: June 25, 2025
  • Genre: Sports Life Sim

The winner of Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards 2025, Umamusume: Pretty Derby is also available as a free Steam game. A life sim-meets-sports management sim with idol elements, Umamusume sees you befriending and training one of a number of horse girls–that is, girls who literally have horse ears and tails.
Umamusume: Pretty Derby is based on the anime of the same name, and features many of the same characters, all of them cute anime girls sporting the name of a legendary racehorse. You take on the role of a trainer, picking a trainee to work with and nurture to help unlock her fullest potential. All the umamusume are also idols, and following each race is a concert performed by the victor.
Unsurprisingly considering its large cast of cute anime girls, Umamusume: Pretty Derby is also a gacha game, which may put people off, but it’s still worth checking out for something a little different.

Battlefield: Redsec

Release Date: October 29, 2025
Battlefield: Redsec
  • Developer: Battlefield Studios
  • Release Date: October 29, 2025
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter

On the heels of Battlefield 6’s highly anticipated release, EA also revealed Battlefield Redsec–Battlefield’s free-to-play hub for squad-based multiplayer, and essentially the franchise’s answer to Call of Duty: Warzone.
Like Warzone, Redsec’s main game mode is a massive 100-player Battle Royale, featuring signature Battlefield features like the franchise’s tactical destruction. The secondary Redsec mode is Gauntlet, a 32-player elimination mode where squads race to complete missions. Redsec also gives free-to-play access to Battlefield Portal, the sandbox mode where players can create their own content, or play in modes created by other fans.
Redsec has seen mixed reviews since release, but it’s still the best place to get a taste of Battlefield 6 without having to drop $70 on the full game.

Palia

Release Date: March 26, 2024
Palia
  • Developer: Singularity 6 Corporation
  • Release Date: March 26, 2024
  • Genre: Life Sim

Palia is a cozy life sim with a whimsical fantasy aesthetic, where players can build, craft, hunt, and explore a magical world alone or with friends. While most free-to-play multiplayer titles focus on combat, Palia is mostly combat-free other than its bow-hunting elements. Instead, players can focus on exploring, foraging, building and decorating their home, and forming relationships with the game’s NPC villagers.
Like many life sims, Palia allows a high level of customization when it comes to building your home, from the layout of the building, to decor, to landscaping and planting crops and decorative plants. Many of the game’s cosmetic items, including decor items, require microtransactions, however, so unlocking more options for your house may get expensive.
While cozy gameplay and life sim elements are the game’s main focus, the world of Palia also has its mysteries to unlock, with adventurous quests available to investigate the mysteries of Ancient Humans. Palia is regularly updated with new content and seasonal events, and got its first major update early last year in the form of the free Elderwood expansion, which added a whole new region to explore.

Where Winds Meet

Release Date: November 15, 2025
Where Winds Meet
  • Developer: Everstone Studio
  • Release Date: November 15, 2025
  • Genre: Action RPG

Another game in NetEase’s expanding stable of free-to-play titles, Where Winds Meet is a Wuxia-inspired open world action-RPG set in tenth-century China. This visually stunning game brings China’s Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period to life in gorgeous detail, with unique traversal mechanics and combat moves inspired by the Wuxia genre.
While some of the weapon options in Where Winds Meet are pretty standard, like swords, spears, double blades, and bows, the game’s Wuxia roots come through in its more unusual weaponry, including rope dart, fans, and even umbrellas. Where Winds Meet’s combat takes some inspiration from the souls genre–though without as high difficulty level as a true souls-like.
Where Winds Meet has an extensive world to explore, and a main storyline to follow on your journey as a young martial artist making their way in the world. While the game can be played solo or co-op, story quests can only be played solo, with co-op gameplay limited to raids or exploration in a small group.
